Frequently Asked Questions about Blacktop driveways and Bob's Paving

What is asphalt?  Why is it the best choice for my driveway or parking lot?  Can I afford a new driveway?  How long will it last, and how do I maintain it?  This section will work to answer these questions and more in order to provide you with more information on Bob's Paving and our product.

bulletWhat is asphalt?

The American Society for Testing & Materials defines asphalt as a dark brown to black cementitious material in which the predominating constituents are bitumens that occur in nature or are obtained in petroleum processing. Bitumen is a generic term for natural or manufactured black or dark-colored solid, semisolid, or viscous cementitious materials that are composed mainly of high molecular weight hydrocarbons. The term includes tars and pitches derived from coal.

Asphalt is one component that makes up the product know as blacktop that is used to cover roads, parking lots, and driveways across the country and the world.  The asphalt used by Bob's Paving is produced locally and meets all DOT and Federal requirements.

bulletWhy choose asphalt?  Isn't concrete a better alternative?

Asphalt has historically been and remains a much better choice than concrete for most applications.  Asphalt is much cheaper and less labor intensive that concrete.  Over time, asphalt has proven to be the best option for almost all construction applications.

bulletCan I afford a new driveway?

The best answer to this question is to get an estimate from Bob's Paving.  Often you will find the cost to be much lower than expected, and a new asphalt driveway will continue to pay dividends for many years.  An asphalt driveway will increase the value of your home, make maintenance of your driveway easier, prevent dust and other debris from tracking into the home, and allow for easier and cheaper snow removal in the winter.  Bob's Paving will work with every customer to provide an affordable and long lasting asphalt driveway that will last for many years to come.

bulletHow long will my driveway last, and what can I do to maintain it?

A new asphalt driveway that is properly maintained will last for many years to come.  One of the most important steps in driveway maintenance is to seal the porous surface approximately one year after paving and every year or every other year after that.  This will prevent water from penetrating the surface and will increase the life of your driveway by many years.  It will also keep the driveway looking new and fresh.  Upon completion of your job, each Bob's Paving customer will receive a handbook that describes proper driveway maintenance procedures, including a section on driveway sealer and a recommendation for a local sealing company.  Feel free to ask if you have any questions concerning sealing your driveway or other maintenance issues.
